Stop Talking – Start Taking Action | My Personal Project

Yawn…another day and you have so much to do.  Paperwork is piling up, the desk looks like a bomb has exploded on top of it and you are behind on so many other things that you just don’t know where to start.  You have been talking to yourself about how you will get things organized and may have told a few of your closest friends for some sympathy.  As of today though….nothing has happened.

I love the saying “nothing happens until something happens” or “nothing changes until something changes”.  This is so true!

Are you ready to start taking action steps toward reaching your goals?  Here are some steps to get you started!

1.  Define one ultimate goal.  In the huge picture of your business or life, what do you need to accomplish?  A great example of this is a personal project that my husband and I are working on now.  We are remodeling our daughter’s bedroom.  I have a clear visual of what it will look like when it is done, however, there are many, many steps to completing this project.  However, nothing will happen until something happens!  So I decided to share my goals with you!

2.  The very first step is to remove the furniture from the bedroom.  Our deadline for this first step is to have all of the furniture moved out of the bedroom Friday evening, May 25th.  We blocked out the time on your calendar to get this done, Friday evening from 6-8.  It probably won’t take this long and that is just fine.

3.  Break the project down into specific details.  What are the steps involved in moving the furniture out?  The first step is to prepare the guest bedroom to allow room for her furniture.  We can move and rearrange those items to make the best use all of the space and still allow the least amount of disruptions possible.

5.  Next, we’ll remove the drawers from her dresser and take them into the guest bedroom.  (This will make it easier to move the dresser itself into the guest room).  When the dresser has been moved, the drawers can go back in and everything will still be accessible.  We’ll then do the same type of process with the rest of her furniture until it is all moved out.

6.  Next, we will take up the carpeting.  Since we have done this before, we know how the process works.  We’ll have a box available to hold the tacks and nails that have to be pulled up, pliers to pull the nails out of the floor, box cutters to cut out pieces of the carpet and trash bags (just in case).  We’ll work methodically through one space at a time until it is all up and removed from the bedroom.  We are allowing all day Saturday to get this part of the project completed.

7.     Next, we’ll prepare the ceiling to be painted.  This means disconnecting the light from the ceiling and then completing any repairs that may need to be made.

You see where I am going with this.  Remodeling this room can’t requires planning and preparation.  The same concept is true with whatever you are organizing.  Whether you are organizing your paperwork, organizing your space or organizing a specific area – thinking through the steps required to reach your goals will help you get the job done quicker, easier and with less stress.
