Financial Documents List

What is the list of financial documents that you should always have handy?  Not just for yourself but for your parents too…especially if your parents are elderly.financialpage

  1. Most recent tax returns (they also have social security numbers on them)
  2. Most recent property tax records….this may be the document that you need to prove residency in case of a natural disaster.
  3. Employment Information – address, phone number and contact person in case of an emergency. This is also helpful to keep with your medical information.  (I learned this lesson when my husband had a medical emergency and I needed to file for his short-term disability.
  4. Copy of stocks, bonds, savings bonds and other securities…this may provide a financial boost in case of an emergency.
  5. List of Bank account locations.
  6. List of Savings Certificates
  7. List of IRA or Retirement Accounts. It is super important to know “where” and “who” to contact in order to handle an estate.
  8. List of any Pensions – especially important to know for your parents. Then know this information – but do you?
  9. List of credit cards. Copy a statement annually and put this in the folder. This will give you the account information and the contact information in case of an emergency. Also, copy the back of the credit card for the the CVV code.
  10. Records of credit payments and account statements

I keep all of this information in my Life in Case. Even if you don’t have everything on the list, start with what you find and move forward.  You won’t regret having the information you need in case of an emergency.
