Top 10 Moving Tips

I was recently contacted by a family friend to help them handle a downsize move. Their friend is almost 98 years old and needed help packing things up.

Keep your Remote together with Your Device

The last time that I personally moved was 1992. But I have moved with the Company that I worked for 5 times within 8 years. Moving is stressful and hard.

So here are some tips to make your move (and #downsize) easy:

  1. Measure your space – know what you have room for. If you are downsizing, you won’t be able to take it all with you. While this can be hard, it is necessary to keep your new space functional
  2. Pack Early – don’t wait until a week or 2 before your move to start packing. There will be too many other deadlines to meet that will interfere with your timeline and keep you from getting packed.
  3. Watch your weight – Remember that your mover could charge more if you have heavier items. And, even if they don’t the more boxes and furniture that they have the longer it will take to load and the more it will cost. If you are able, replace items once you get to your new home. Let someone else carry it into your house for Free!
  4. Use Ziplock Bags – Using ziplock bags to store smaller items such as cords, remotes and miscellaneous items will make it easier to set everything up in your new home. Put like items together and include a piece of paper with a list of what the cords go to, i.e. cable cord, phone cord, etc.)
  5. Give your Mover a Layout – Provide them with a layout of each room so that you and the mover will know where to place your furniture
  6. Document each Box – Write a list of what is in each box. Tape the list to the top of each box and keep one with you.
  7. Use Small and Medium Size Boxes – They are quicker to unpack and lighter to pick up by yourself.
  8. Emergency Supply Box – Pack a box with items that you will need on your first night in your new home. This includes toilet paper, paper towels, a washcloth, towel, glass, change of clothes, important papers, phone chargers, etc.
  9. Hire someone to help unpack immediately – Unpack and recycle the boxes as soon as possible. Avoid walking over and around boxes by hiring someone to help unpack the important rooms.
  10. Stay Calm – Unpacking is a process that takes time. Unpack room by room.

This is all a lot of work. I would also suggest to NOT get a storage unit. Statistics say that you will spend hundreds of dollars storing items just to donate or eliminate them later. Save yourself money and #donate and #eliminate while packing.
